Recent experiences in Rift…

Starfall Prophecy, the latest Rift expansion, released on November 16. There has been some controversy about this expansion. The raid will not be released until later, but this was actually announced long before the expansion was released. After the expansion’s launch, however, some features had to be disabled. Some of them have been enabled again, but the fortress sieges are still not there. They are on the public test realm now, though, so I guess we’ll get to see them on live soon!

Additionally, there are apparently not enough quests to reach level 70 if all you do is quest. For me, the main content in MMOs when levelling should be the quests (and dungeons, but not having to grind them repeatedly). I also remember one expansion in Lotro not having enough quests. It was annoying and felt like the developers had either run out of time or out of ideas. That case had been worse, though, as Turbine had first announced that there would be 5 more levels and then they had said that because they had so much content, they had decided to switch to 10 more levels – only for players to run out of quests to do before getting these 10 levels. In general, I can only repeat myself from what I said about Lotro’s expansion: I do not like this at all. Not even because I don’t want to do dungeons or anything else other than questing, but because when I look at my alts, I know it’s just much more fun to have quests to choose from instead of having to do each and every one on every single character just to reach max. level with them. It gets repetitive and boring fast. A new powerleveling guide was just released and that one mentions the issue with not enough experience from quests as well.

rift meffanda cleric hitting level 70

I guess I am lucky that I am a slow leveler. I think I should fall into the “average” range of people with a busy life and not that much time to devote to gaming. When I read about there not being enough quests, I thankfully also saw the suggestion to do crafting dailies. As I could not actively play every day, I at least did these dailies regularly. I was amazed to see that the 5 quests I can do with my crafting professions led to a huge increase of XP (it was between 6 – 15 % depending on which level my cleric had – a bigger increase at the lower levels – and whether I had a bonus to XP gain activated). This actually leaves me with a whole lot of questing content untouched and I am currently trying to decide whether to take my mage or my warrior through the new content.

However, even though I am complaining here, I still really like Rift and bought a year of Patron time with their recent sale going on. Unfortunately, I was not awarded the amount of loyalty I should have received with my purchase. I did as was suggested on the forums and sent in a support ticket. I may be spoiled from World of Warcraft, but waiting several days seemed very very long. And then their reply was that I was awarded the correct amount of loyalty. I told them my purchase number for the patron time as well as screenshots which I had taken before and after the purchases (pure luck here! ^^) and one of these did the trick and I received my loyalty. In their defence, once you are at the top of the queue, replies are very fast and from the time I sent in the purchase number and the screenshots to when I received my loyalty, I think I had actually only made myself some coffee and oatmeal for breakfast. :p Bugs can happen and as long as they get sorted out, I’m happy.

Now on to something more positive about Rift: I did enjoy the quests I’ve seen, even though they once again seem very weird. Probably less so if you’re used to Rift and its lore. The new regions are beautiful to look at! And without doing much at all during Rift’s Yulefest, I got to exchange the yulefest currency for a new mount and a new dimension. I also got quite some nice rewards from the 4h minion missions after they reduced the amount of Aventurine one can hoard to rush through these missions once a special event is going on. I think I’m at three new companion pets! Additionally, when I saw that Rift was part of the Steam winter sale (and they match the price on Steam in their own store as well), I wanted to see if they also offered the upgrade to Starfall Prophecy’s Deluxe Edition with a discount. Instead, I found that the upgrade was removed completely. A short internet search revealed that Trion announced the upgrade to go on sale at some point in January. I can only assume that this is the reason why it’s removed right now as to avoid all of us buying it without the discount? If that is the case: Neat! If not: Still convenient. :p Now I only need to decide whether I really want that dragon mount or not. It can’t fly, it just looks awesome. But I did spend quite a lot of money on Rift already and I’m not sure I want to give them even more money at this point… especially since I have a lot of awesome mounts already.

Primalist and cross-promotions

All of Trion’s own games (Defiance, Rift and Trove) are receiving some cross-promotion rewards when you log into their newest game, Atlas Reactor, this weekend (to be more precise, between Friday, Oct. 7 at 5:00pm (PT) and Sunday, Oct. 9 at 11:59pm (PT)). In Rift, everybody gets 15 days of free Patron time. If you’re in the USA, you can also win a pack with all of their mounts. In Trove, you get two Empowered Gem Boxes. In Defiance, you get 15 days of Patron time (if you’re playing on the PC) and 2 x 15 inventory slots (both for PC and console players).

Logging into Atlas Reactor seems to be enough to get these rewards. So if you really don’t care about the game, just install it briefly, log in, check if you got the rewards in your game(s) and uninstall the game again. Or… give it a try! :p Despite it being advertised as a turn-based PvP game, you can perfectly play it as a PvE game with or without other players, by the way!

So with 15 days of Patron time in Rift also comes a 10 % discount in their store. I completely missed that they had reduced the cost of their additional class, the Primalist, back in April. It’s still not cheap if you ask me, – about 28 € without the discount – but with the discount, I decided it’s time to get the Primalist. I like having all classes unlocked in my MMOs! What I had not considered was that I also needed another character slot. Thankfully, I was not at the maximum amount already (12) and “only” had to buy another slot and character slots are reasonably cheap.

After that, the usual “obstacles” occurred. Do I really want a 5th dwarf? I already have one elf in both factions and for me, that’s about 1.5 elves more than I have on average in most other games that have that race. ;) I chose to try out a human on guardian side (a Mathosian) instead since I do not have one. Yeah, I’m not a fan of humans either, because they are too ordinary for fantasy games. So I’m not really sure why I chose this one… I just figured it might be nice to have something non-dwarf for once and the other non-elf non-human is the Bahmi race which I found too big and bulky for my taste. So, welcome, little Ghamina. May you grow a few levels before the expansion arrives and you’ll be put back on the shelf as my dwarf cleric will take over again! Also, I can’t believe I had not saved or used the name Ghamina on that shard until now…

Atlas Reactor: Win 1 of 5 Lockwood Citadel Skins

(Update: Giveaway is closed. Winners will be receiving their codes shortly – We decided to give away 6 codes instead of 5, so everybody’s a winner! :D)

Atlas Reactor entered its headstart (which you can join immediately if you purchase the founder pack). If you don’t own a founder’s pack, you will have to wait until the game’s official launch to play the game for free. But don’t worry: This day is tomorrow!

The launcher states that the game will launch at 8 am PDT (click the link to see the time in your own time zone) – so in less than 24 hours! And to celebrate this occasion, we were given special skins (Lockwood Citadel Skins) to give away to our readers! Skins are purely cosmetic, of course. Lockwood is the freelancer you get to try during the tutorial, by the way. He is one of my favourite freelancers and I think purple suits him very well! So if you want one of these skins for yourself as well, read the rules below and leave a comment. :)

Atlas Reactor Lockwood Citadel Skin

  3. Leave a comment saying “I have read and agree with the giveaway’s rules” if you want to enter the giveaway for the Lockwood Citadel Skin. No other keyword is necessary here (since we only have this skin to give away in the first place).
  4. The codes will expire on November 6, so if you win it, make sure to enter it before that date!

Last but not least, good luck to everybody who participates!

Bookahneer’s Geekwatch (September 2016)

Guild Wars 2 Bookahneer's GeekwatchFirst of all, we have Rift and some tiny news about its upcoming expansion “Starfall Prophecy”. We still do not have a date for the expansion’s launch, unfortunately. I speculated about the time range before, but other than that, it’s all guessing. Of course, us players are getting impatient as we would love to hop into the new content right away! But the latest post about it was a definite “no launch date yet”. However, we now know that there will be a beta (since Trion usually does these with Rift, it was to be expected, but confirmation is still nice!) and that news about beta will come “well before we announce a date”.

Thankfully, Guild Wars 2 will launch its next piece of content update “Rising Flames” next Tuesday, so I won’t have to starve for too long with nothing to do (totally ignoring the fact I also just got World of Warcraft’s Legion… :p). I am not hyped as with Guild Wars 2, I strongly prefer not having any expectations and then just enjoying what’s given to me. However, I like that there will be a new map again!

Atlas Reactor Charr Freelancer Rask

Last piece of news from me but most exciting: Atlas Reactor just got a launch date! The game will officially release on October 5. From everything I have seen and experienced, I can tell you that I am confident that this game is ready for release! But you do not need to trust my words here, as you can hop into the game for free already (note that there will be a wipe prior to release!). And from September 15 (wait – that’s today I just realized) until September 25 the game will be in open beta and you will get everything unlocked! The game will be free to play when it launches but certain things are locked until you pay a one-time fee (all heroes, called freelancers here, will be unlocked then, for example).

“Bookahneer’s Geekwatch” is the place where we take a look at all those little pieces of gaming news that have attracted our interest and/or talk about what’s recently been in the spotlight of other fansites.

Atlas Reactor Giveaway: Grey’s Citadel Skin, Loot Matrices and more beta codes!

(Update August 22, 9 pm local time: This giveaway is closed. All winners will get their codes via email, so you won’t have to do anything. Just wait a bit…)

Trion has been very generous and as such, we did not only get codes for Rift, but codes for Atlas Reactor as well. In case you have not heard about the game yet, Atlas Reactor is a turn-based battle arena. It has the obligatory PvP mode, but it also has a nice PvE mode where you can either play against bots with other players or purely with and against NPCs. So even if you like such a game but do not like PvP at all, Atlas Reactor offers you the chance to enjoy it anyway.

Devilian Shimmering Devil Wings

Having said that, we are giving away 10 beta codes. Atlas Reactor has a “Free Mode” which is available right now already. Download the game and play it. However, there are some restrictions. Once you buy the game, you are free from all these restrictions. Or, if you use a beta code, you are free from these restrictions throughout the beta. So, even if those codes are not necessary to try out the game per se, they still add some very nice convenience (like being able to try out all freelancers right away). Once the game goes live, you will either return to the “Free Mode” restrictions or you can buy the game to get rid of them.

Please keep in mind that there is going to be a wipe before the game launches! But the skin will stay and you will receive these extra loot matrices again.

Atlas Reactor_Loot Matrix

In addition, we also have 10 Grey’s Citadel Skins and Loot Matrices to give away. The first is an “exclusive” skin for Grey, one of the freelancers in Atlas Reactor. The second is a reward you get for gaining a season level. Loot matrices can also be bought in the store in case you want your unlocks faster. As I wrote above, there will be a wipe, so your unlocks will be gone once the game launches. However, you will get the two loot matrix items again:

“Players who redeem these codes will get these Loot Matrix items again after the post-Beta wipe when Atlas Reactor launches.”

I am not sure how many Atlas Reactor players follow our blog and/or how many of our readers are interested in the game. So we will split as we did the last time: Write “Beta” and/or “Grey” in the comment field (you can try your luck with both prizes).

So, once again, there are the prizes:

  • 10x Beta Code
  • 10x Grey’s Citadel Skin + 2 Loot Matrix items

Rules and Important Notes

  1. One entry per person! Please stay fair! Your IP address gets logged when you comment, so we can see if you try to enter several times.
  2. Leave a comment with the keyword “Beta” and/or “Grey” to enter the giveaway.
  3. Leave a valid email address when commenting. It will only be used by us for contacting the winners and nothing else! Enter said email address into the “email” field, do not add it to the comment field as that one is public! We will send an email to the winners with the codes you’ve won.
  4. The codes are only valid until the first Monday of next month (September 5). It’s probably best for you to enter them right away at the official website.
  5. No debating about the outcome! We will randomly choose the winners.
  6. This giveaway will run from today until 22. August (9 pm our time!). Click the link to check for the time in your timezone.
  7. If you have not commented here before, your comment will have to be approved by me or bookahnerk before it becomes publicly available. Do not make a second or even a third comment. We will approve your comment as soon as we can! :)

Last but not least, good luck to everybody who participates!
