Ask Nerdy Bookahs: Guild Wars 2 Edition (September 2015)

It’s time for another “Ask Nerdy Bookahs”. We have looked through the search terms that led people to our blog for which we know we do not have fitting answers in our blog posts and we’re trying to cover those topics here now. For better readability, I am changing the plain “search terms” to correct the grammar and add the missing question marks. :p Today’s post focuses on Guild Wars 2, mainly because the game recently switched to a “free to play” model which naturally leads to new players with questions.

Warrior vs Guardian

I am not that involved with PvP to say which one would probably come out victorious when those two professions duel each other. But I can tell you which profession I like more: Definitely the warrior! I should actually like the Guardian more, because I love playing support roles. But in Guild Wars 2, there is no trinity – not the “tank, healer, damage” trinity nor the “damage, support, control” trinity as ArenaNet talked about before launch. What we do have is that each character can do damage, support and control. Some focus more on damage, some may focus more on support. Some players may even tell you that it’s all about damage and nothing else… but in the end, it really comes down to personal preference. And this is why the warrior comes out on top for me. The guardian feels slow and kind of clunky to me sometimes. I really just love playing with swords and axes with my warrior and having her jump right into the battle. It is a fast and fun class – at least, when played that way. There are, of course, other ways to play a warrior and a guardian.

Mesmer can’t kill with staff

Of course they can! If you look at MetaBattle, for example, you can find several builds using the staff. The PU Condi Roamer, a Condition Shatter build and a Mantra Shatter build. Those are just some examples from one website. I don’t know anything about mantra builds, but as the first two names suggest already, builds based around conditions are pretty good with staff. And now that I’ve looked at those, I really feel the urge to experiment more with my mesmer. I used to play with staff quite a lot, but have been using scepter mainly in the last few months.

Can’t enter Black Citadel until level 10?

This depends on what kind of account you have. If you play with a free account, then no. You need to get your character to level 10 in order to leave the starter maps. If you buy Guild Wars 2, then you get upgraded and can freely switch to other regions without being level-restricted. You can see the differences between the free and paid accounts on the official website.

Heart of Thorns Polymock

Oh dear… how much I wish this would come. However, we have not heard anything about Polymock, so it’s probably best to assume that no, we will not get it any time soon or at all. There is a portal leading to “Polymock Arenas“, though, which could give us some hope.

And last but not least:

I’m sorry, but what? How does a person even get Google to show our blog with such a search term? Also, say hello to your dog, cat or baby – depending on who it was who typed that. :p

So this was Blaugust 2015 – Blaugust Day 31

I did this kind of challenge the first time back in November 2013. I tried it again in November 2014, but did not reach my goal and in fact, gave up on November 13 already. :p The latter is also why I decided relatively late to join Blaugust. My first thought was: Yeah, no way will I have the time or the energy to do it! But I like challenges like this one and when I was told that getting to 15 will already be a milestone (the title “survivor”), I thought to myself: Yes, this is something I can realistically do!

Never did I think that I would be able to write this many blog posts in a record time (for my own standards). And on top of that, Blaugust couldn’t have had a better timing. My job situation changed in the middle of August giving me more hours of work per week (hurrah!), so that I have your standard usual full-time job now. Getting Blaugust done together with my job without neglecting anything was exactly the kind of motivation boost to show myself that when I want to achieve something, I can do so!

I have finally started writing my dissertation and yes, I know that blog posts about PC games and a scientific dissertation cannot be really compared. But both are about writing and both are about something I feel passionate about! Also both require sitting down, focusing, and motivating yourself. Blaugust also means that I have to let my inner censor go. No more “Is this post really worth to be written?” and no “This post sounds like rubbish, better delete it again”. The same goes for writing in other settings. You always have your inner censor and depending on what you are writing, there is also some kind of deadline sitting in your neck.

So, what I take out of Blaugust for me personally is that I do have the determination, that I can motivate myself, focus and that I have the will to go forward and reach my goal. Yes, compared to that other big project, this seems tiny and irrelevant. But for my mind, this was a very important goal to reach!

I also want to say Thank You to everybody who read my posts, liked them and/or commented on them! Getting feedback is a nice thing and reminds me that while I like rambling in here, there are also actually people out there who “listen”. Weird concept, isn’t it? :p

On top of that, I found a whole lot of blogs that I either paid not enough attention to before or that I simply didn’t know existed. I will have to go through the list of all participants and see that I can get them added to our blogroll here. This may take a while, though, because now, I’ll go on a mini vacation. In other words: You will be spared from reading my blog posts for a few days until I return. :p

GW2: Dyes and staff… (Blaugust Day 29)

What an exciting week for Guild Wars 2!

This week, Guild Wars 2 turned 3 years old and to celebrate this, from this point on, all characters will get a very special birthday presents on their own 3rd birthday (yes, this means the character has to be 3 years old, not your account): The Celebratory Dye Pack. This lets you choose one of the rare dyes in the game that were previously only available as a random drop from dye packs bought in the gem shop. Some of those dyes are priced above 200 gold even with the most expensive one being 1000 gold (if you want to buy it from somebody directly via the Trading Post). Of course, that most expensive one, Electro Blue, is the one I took from the pack now. :p It’s just a nice coincidence that only a few days ago, I wrote about the dyes I still need to buy and how expensive some of them are. Now I just need to wait for my characters’ birthdays and I can get some of them at least.

There is also another booster item that buffs your character for a certain amount of time, some “teleport to friend” items and another level-up scroll. Only that it’s not level 20 like the ones from the first birthday, or level 20 from the 2nd birthday (mentioned separately here, because they – still – don’t stack with each other despite being identaical). This year’s item boosts your character to level 30. Nothing there that I really need or use. But the dyes are awesome! :)

Daredevil teaser image

We’ve gotten another elite specialization reveal this week. After seeing the teaser image for the next elite specialization on Twitter on Monday, I had gotten rather excited! But I decided to remain calm until we’d get more information…

Then I had seen the datamined skills for the thief. The blog post today just confirmed what I already knew: I am very excited about this specialization! Thief is my third favourite character. But what I saw about the warrior specialization didn’t interest me much at all. To be honest, the warrior is a very solid profession that can withstand a lot of damage, and she’s convenient to play, but at the end of the day, I actually think it’s a rather boring profession. The thief, on the other hand, is a lot of fun! Seeing the staff and reading about the specialization, I know I want to try her out! Maybe when/if we get back from our vacation on time, I can hop into the beta for an hour or so on Sunday evening.

GW2 Skkia asura thief

I also cannot wait to see the thief in action in tomorrow’s livestream. Because what I’m still missing is seeing the animations. Because I actually like the style of having a melee class fight with a staff. Warning: Anecdote incoming!

Back in my early World of Warcraft days, I had made a female orc warrior, Grola. She ran around the Barrens, rather clueless on what to do next, when she found a staff (probably swallowed by a lion there). Even though it was stat-less, it was better than the weapons I had carried (she was very young and inexperienced). The animations were so good! Fast, agile, and just generally fun to look at. I turned to bookahnerk and told him excitedly how much I loved the staff with my warrior. Unfortunately, he had to tell me the truth: While a warrior can wield a staff, there were no staves in the game with non-caster stats. And in a game that heavily relies on the stats on items, there was absolutely no way I could have a viable staff-wielding warrior.

So now I’m sitting here, all excited, because I can get my little agile, sneaky staff-wielding thief. I just hope I’ll like the animations. But… we will see tomorrow. :)

Ask Nerdy Bookahs: Trove Edition – Blaugust Day 26

It’s time for another “Ask Nerdy Bookahs”. We have looked through the search terms that led people to our blog for which we know we do not have fitting answers in our blog posts and we’re trying to cover those topics here now. For better readability, I am changing the plain “search terms” to correct the grammar and add the missing question marks. :p

Trove is the newest game and officially launched on July 9, 2015. Naturally, there are quite a few new players out there and a huge proportion of questions leading to our blog are about Trove. That’s why I am going to start with questions about Trove, but there are also a few about Guild Wars 2 – and surprisingly, even some about Lotro, even though I haven’t been writing about this game anymore in quite a while. So, I will ignore the Lotro questions. I wouldn’t be of much help anyway. ;)

How to get the N-0 Depth Scoper in Trove?

Plasma fishing is not in the game yet and this fishing rod seems to unlock plasma fishing. So, you will have to wait a bit longer until you can unlock and use it. I imagine it will unlock like the other fishing rods as well: Go to the central hub (hold the “H” key). Look for the two little lakes and find the “Nautical Assembler” next to one of them. This is where you can craft the fishing rods.

Trove Nautical Assembler

What currency do you buy fishing poles with in Trove?

I am going to link you to the wiki which has a nice list of the different poles. Click on “expand” to see them all.

Which character uses pirate ship?

All characters can use the ships. As soon as you are in water, you can “summon” your ship (if you unlocked one). You can buy the boat “SS Dinghy” in the hub (press “H”). There are two lakes with a house next to it. Within that house, you will find the NPC Saltwater Sam who will sell you that boat for 500 glim. Make sure to also get a sail.

What to do in Trove?

Lots of things. It depends on what you want to do. There is no PvP (see next question) yet. But other than that, you can go kill mobs, or build in a club world or build in your cornerstone or level up different professions like gardening or fishing. Of course, there are also various different goals you can set for yourself like having all classes at maximum level or having the best equipment possible or getting your mastery rank to level 100 (which ultimately means doing a lot of the aforementioned stuff as all of that, with the exception of building, adds to your mastery rank), so you can get a chaos chest every day.

Is there any pvp in Trove?

I know I covered this in previous blog posts. However, since Trion did announce that they are working on PvP, I figured an update wouldn’t hurt: No, currently, there is no PvP in Trove, but they are working on some kind of PvP. It will definitely not be the open world kind where you can get attacked and killed by other players even though all you wanted to do was take a stroll and do a few dungeons.

Cat soultrap drop rates

As far as I know, cat soultraps do not drop. You buy them from an NPC in the Treasure Isles (the large water area). Look for ships that have a sail with a red bearded pirate on them (see picture below). Those can have the cat soultrap vendor on them. In general, the red-bearded sail means that there is a vendor on the ship that sells you something for Glim. What exactly they sell you is random, as far as I know. So if you’re looking for one particular vendor, you will have to look for lots of those ships until you’re lucky and find the right one.

What’s the difference between the male and female head?

I thought there’d be an obvious difference, but when I had a look at the faces just now, I could not find one. Apparently, you can even have the same hair styles? Although I did not check if all of them are identical for both genders.

To show you all the available faces, I took screenshots of them all. Hair style, hair colour, skin colour and eye colour are the same across all faces.

How to change the UI looks?

I’m afraid you can’t. You can’t resize the UI and you cannot move it in any way.

Will plants grow while I’m not playing?

Yes. Simple answer. :p

Should Trove add more ways to get cubits?

Oh, a question where my opinion counts, I guess. Yes, I think we should have more ways than we currently do (500 per weekday and 1000 per day on Saturdays and Sundays if we do dungeons as well as a few one-time gains through gaining certain mastery ranks and doing the first introduction missions to the game). But I don’t think it should be too much, because quite a lot of things are unlocked with cubits in the in-game store (or alternatively, if you are impatient, with real money). I think this system is actually quite neat. I like having the feeling that I’m slowly working towards something by not having all the cubits I need at once. At the same time, if you are really impatient and don’t want to do the dungeons to slowly earn your cubits, you can also choose to spend real money which, in turn, will give income to the developers. Just so nobody misunderstands: The stuff you can buy is not necessary to play the game!

Best “Main Theme” from a PC game – Blaugust Day 25

Bookahnerk was preparing our “pen and paper” roleplaying session and played around with the music. He’s going to add background music and mostly uses songs from the various game soundtracks that we have acquired over time. He also uses several programmes together to add e.g. thunderstorm and various other ambient noises where it fits.

So, he was playing the different songs when this one song started and I said to him: I’ve got a new topic for Blaugust: “Best…” – I didn’t get further than that as he finished my sentence. “Best main theme ever” for both of us, without a doubt, goes to Baba Yetu from Civilization IV. Raise your hand if you left the game open at the “launch screen” just to listen to the song. :p

There are a lot of awesome songs out there, a lot of catchy ones, even a lot of songs where you can probably easily sing along… like this one:

But for me at least, nothing comes close to “Baba Yetu”. It just feels so strong and powerful.

Number three on my list (yes, I would put the Skyrim one on no. 2, but mainly because it stays in your memory so easily) is “the theme song that is no theme song”.

I think before launch, ArenaNet had added that theme to play during a trailer or teaser video and I, among others, thought that this was the main theme. I’ve got to say I was disappointed to hear the real main theme then as it doesn’t come close in comparison. It has grown on me by now, but I still very much prefer the Norn Theme – even though in general, I am not a fan of the Norn at all. Sorry!

I could go on and on and list so many other great soundtracks. It’s actually a shame I usually play with the music turned off nowadays. But we’re usually watching streams or Netflix or just talk, and the music gets distracting quite fast that way.
