Paeroka’s Ponderings: What’s new in this year’s Halloween festivities?

Paeroka's Ponderings featured image for columnI love and hate festivals in MMOs. In general, I think that most MMOs capture the spirit of the respective festival quite well. This is especially true for the Halloween ones because you mostly need to add a few pumpkins and something spooky to get it right. But I also hate them because I know that they’re available only for a limited amount of time and I always feel that I’m missing out when I don’t do xx dailies in each of them which then leads to me not playing in any of the festivals at all!

At the same time, I’m wondering what’s new and if I should pay more attention, search through the game forums, etc. for information and that makes me wonder why the developers aren’t offering something like this to help the casual player. I guess that they want to keep the new content a surprise – if there even is any new content (or new rewards to buy for festival tokens). But then I’m back to “this is only available for a limited amount of time”.

GW2: Urgent do not read out loud
Mail from Magister Tassi

I received a mail in Guild Wars 2 that hints at something new in the Mad King’s Labyrinth. I didn’t play it at all in the last year, so how am I supposed to know what’s new? So far, I went into the Labyrinth twice and killed a few bosses, but there was nothing unusual. I also have no idea if there’s anything “worth” doing in Guild Wars 2 that could give me a nice reward (not the blue and green items, please…). I like hopping into the Labyrinth for a bit in the evenings, though, because it’s mindless fun. But only for a short amount of time.

When it comes to Lord of the Rings Online, there is always FibroJedi, my favourite LotRO blog because he always manages to update his guides for the festivals (like the Fall Festival Guide for 2022)! Even if I rarely play them, I know I can head on over there to see what’s new and to read about how something works. I would also say that LotRO has the best Halloween-themed activity for me. I just absolutely love the Haunted Burrow. Even though I don’t go in there every day to grab the tokens from the chests, I love knowing that it’s back and available for players to experience again! It’s done so well and fitting to the hobbits. Also, yes, I do actually jump in my chair quite often despite knowing that a wooden goblin will jump out at me. But it’s all in good fun!

According to FibroJedi’s post about this year’s festival, there are three new cosmetic pets. I only like the look of one of them, the Black Marble Wolf-dog, so I’ll try to get that one for my Beorning. That should be easy enough to accomplish.

Now there’s just one question: What is happening in the Mad King’s Labyrinth?

What do you think?
