As I mentioned before, I decided to give the “old-school” World of Warcraft a try on a private server. Directly after playing a warlock over there, I went back to the “real” World of Warcraft for an immediate comparison with the warlock nowadays. My memory told me that I had only played a warlock in vanilla WoW because it seemed like a good idea on a PvP server, but not because I actually liked the class. However, as is common with memories, this is wrong. I absolutely loved the warlock class. I do not, however, like what Blizzard did with the class over the years… or with several aspects of the class experiences in general. Don’t get me wrong, I think they also gave us some really good improvements like letting shamans and paladins be good damage dealers or tanks.
But overall, it’s a rather shallow experience to play warlock now, for example. In the classic version (my memory includes Burning Crusade, the game’s first expansion, as I played during vanilla and Burning Crusade, but then left the game and only returned sporadically), doing the quest chain to get my first imp was… well okay, not exactly epic. But it was special. It made me appreciate getting the imp! It made it feel very immersive. In the current version of the game, once you ding level 5, the spell to summon your imp automatically appears in your action bar. You don’t even need to go to your class trainer anymore (do they still have a purpose nowadays?). It’s like any other spell that also appears automatically when you level up. As it is now, the imp is one of many spells. I know Blizzard removed class-specific quests over the years and I still think that was a mistake. Yes, I get that doing long tedious quest chains just to get a spell isn’t fun. But who says they have to be long and tedious? What’s wrong with at least sending you to your class trainer who has a little task that proves you will be capable of summoning and commanding a demon? We’re not talking about cute little bunnies. I am to take care of a demon and it just appears in my action bar! That is a lot of responsibility.
I also clearly remember not liking the soul shards back then: Always making sure you had enough, so you could resummon your demons. Or having run out of them because your demon kept dying on you. It was annoying having to farm them and more so, the soul shards taking up so much space in your inventory! But now that they are completely gone and it’s only a system where you have up to three as a resource (like a rogue’s energy) and they recharge by using a specific curse on a target (or when out of combat, assumedly), it seems like a generic caster class just like a mage. The frost mage has a water elemental, the warlock has a demon. Not much of a difference, really.
Yes, I may be exaggerating here. But just a tiny little bit… or maybe more. In the end, I really loved the flavour that came with class-specific quests in general and the warlock quests in particular. I also still vividly remember a Stockades run with friends when one friend told me to use crippling poison with my rogue that slows the fleeing enemies and I hadn’t even known there was a quest for that skill (even funnier that we had done several other dungeons before and even though it was just the three of us, we had managed to kill all the trash and the bosses without them!). We paused the dungeon run and I hurried to get my poisons. Moments like these are actually funny, though, and what you will remember about playing with your friends, right? Getting all skills automatically takes away some… flavour.
