Guild Missions – Dragon Season-Style

GW2 Guild Mission Day 1We did our first Guild Mission yesterday. We gathered right north of Lion’s Arch – where apparently, every guild on our server had decided to gather as well. ;) Especially thanks to Culling, it’s important to meet somewhere empty, so you can actually see which of your guild members showed up. Before we could start, it took us a very long time to get organized. Most of us were in Raidcall as voice-chat is just so much faster and more efficient in organizing things. Still, it took a long time. At the end of the night, we also shared ideas on how to make everything a bit faster. Tonight, we met again. This time, putting people in groups happened fast. We knew where to go within a few seconds and everything went a lot more smoothly.

Tier 1 of the Guild Bounty Missions was relatively easy. Two mobs in two regions that you need to kill within 15 minutes. For that, we were split into two groups and roamed both regions. I guess guides that you can find online help a lot with finding out which regions the mobs appear in. ;) Other than that, I did not look at any maps with routes the NPCs can take. I think that takes the fun out of it. Besides, give us a few weeks and we’ll probably know the routes anyway.

Tier 2 had 3 (or 4?) NPCs which we managed as well. Tier 3 with 6 NPCs was a lot more difficult. While we were 6 groups, we just weren’t fast enough to find and kill all the NPCs yesterday. You have 15 minutes for each of those tiers, by the way. That’s why we decided to try again tonight.

GW2_Guild Mission Day 2As I said in the beginning, everything was better today. When I logged into Raidcall, I was already told which sub-channel to join there and which group I belonged to. We met in an area different from that of the other groups. No intermingling which also meant no confusion. Last but not least, the individual group leaders were all in one party in the game, so they could communicate with each other. We managed to kill the first 4 NPCs pretty fast. The groups that had killed their NPC then moved to the other regions to help the remaining groups. Thanks to the sub-channels in Raidcall, I didn’t hear anything from the other groups which also meant less distraction. When a waypoint was linked in guild chat, the group name was always mentioned.

GW2_Guild Mission Group PictureWhat I want to point out with all that rambling above is that within a day, we learned how to organize the Guild Mission Bounty. We downed all NPCs within the time frame. We all knew what to do and where to be. At the same time, I’ve met – and heard – more from fellow guild members within the last two days than I have within the last few months. Our guild is special in that almost every guild member is Greek and we non-Greeks are in the minority. But everybody tries their best in communicating in English (us included, of course). Raidcall was no problem and while I did hear a few Greek sentences (I love the sound of the language), almost everything was in English and we understood each other just fine.

I share the opinion of some fellow guild members that those guild missions are great because they give us, the guild, a common goal to achieve. They make us work and play together and, in case of multi-lingual and/or bigger guilds, they bring us closer together and make us get to know each other better.

GW2_Guild MissionA word of advice, as I think some people were confused about this: You can see which NPCs you need to kill for the bounty. Open the Guild Panel, click on “Upgrades”, then on the “Missions” tab. The NPCs that were killed already are displayed in grey with a “Complete” next to them. There, you can also see how much time is left – also in grey. The picture shows you a Tier 1 Guild Mission Bounty where Diplomat Tarban is still alive while Poobadoo is already defeated and thus, shown as “Complete”. We had 9 minutes left to find and kill Diplomat Tarban. The text when hovering over the name does not show you the name of the region he’s in.

Pink Day in LA in 6 days!

Pink Day in LA will take place on October 20. In honour of the event, we have “pinkified” our logo – that’s the least we can do, after all. ;)

This event was first started in 2007 and with the release of Guild Wars 2, we will see it in Guild Wars 1 and Guild Wars 2 this year. Check the official “Pink Day in LA” website to see whether your server has volunteers that will host the event.

The purpose of “Pink Day in LA” is to raise awareness for breast cancer and collect donations for the Canadian Cancer Society. Apart from raising awareness and donations, there will also be prizes that you can win.

All in all, I really love to see the game community come together like that and organize such a big event. Now even throughout two games. I will definitely be there on our server, Aurora Glade, where Dragon Season are hosting the event (who happen to be both a GW2 fansite and the guild I am in ^^).

So, when does it take place? The website says “October 20, 12pm – 6pm CST” but really, time zones are confusing. If you’re having the same problems with time zones, head over here to check for your country/area.

Bookahneer’s Geekwatch: Joining Talk Tyria and GuildMag

Guild Wars 2 Bookahneer's GeekwatchWelcome to today’s Bookahneer’s Geekwatch! The place about miscellaneous interesting news related to Guild Wars 2 – and on occasion, other games.

As some of you may know, I am occasionally writing for Talk Tyria and GuildMag as well. This Geekwatch isn’t about Guild Wars 2 per se, but about those two fan sites that are both looking for new members to fill various positions.

If you’re interested in joining Talk Tyria, head over to this post for more information. I, myself, am a “contributing writer” there and I’m trying to write a post every other month (from now on, mostly about asura if they let me ^^). Next to my job and my own blog and my hobbies, it’s not always possible to write that many other posts and Talk Tyria gives me this flexibility. Guest posts for Talk Tyria are possible as well, by the way!

GuildMag is also looking for writers, but primarily, we’d need somebody who can do design work. Check out the post if you’re interested in that or look for which other positions are open.

What had kept me from applying there at first were the requirements (the English skill being close to a native level was one, for example). In the end, the GuildMag bunch is great and I feel very comfortable there. I think what’s more important than fitting all those requirements 100% is if you’re a reliable person who loves the game and who loves writing/designing, etc. A person that knows what they’re getting into and that does’t just leave a month later again. ;)

That’s the good thing – and the bad thing – of having your own blog: You can just decide to not do anything for a while if you feel too lazy/are too busy. But getting into such a project like Talk Tyria or GuildMag means that there are other people waiting for you to do your part and you can’t just leave for a month without telling anybody. On the other hand, it’s a great motivator to have other people around and I really love that there’s always somebody willing to give me feedback for an idea.

Guilds – not as unlimited as we thought

Edit: People questioned Elixabeth’s ability to quote what was said in the PAX panel, so bookahnerk looked and finally found a video of it:

I have finally received a reply to my support ticket and it’s not a good one. I’m going to include the relevant parts. So if you do get “Network error . Please check your internet connection and try again. (Code=3040:1002:3:1930:101)” when trying to accept a guild invitation, you need to make a decision: Do you really want to be part of this guild? Then leave another one! If you don’t, then decline, because according to that support reply, we’re only allowed to be in a very limited number of guilds as opposed to the “as many as you like” as they had announced.

I am mostly disappointed that the only number I have ever heard was “as many as you like” and I thought that it’s a great idea because no longer do we have to restrict ourselves with which community we want to be a part of. In my last entry I’ve already written about it and about the communities that I want to join. This, however, does not seem to come true. I need to make decisions anyway. It doesn’t seem to be the revolutionary feature that I thought it would be. One where you can be part of so many different circles and communities just like in real life. 4 – or 5 – just doesn’t seem high enough for that to work. At least, not if you’re a chatty person like me who likes being in different communities.

Here’s the response (and once I do get back to work, I’m going to post a suggestion – if anybody else does so in the meantime, please let me know):

The error 3040 message means that you are already a member of too many guilds. There is currently a limit of 4 guilds per account. My understanding is that the intended limit is 5, so you may be able to add an extra guild in the future, but at this point I don’t have an ETA for that fix. Also, the limit includes guild invitations as those are potential guild memberships. At this time, there is not any way for you to increase the limit on the number of guilds that your account can belong to. The best suggestion that I can offer right now is that you leave a guild or decline some guild invitations that you’ve already received.

If you’d like to see a higher limit, please consider posting your feedback in the suggestions area of the official forums, which you can find here: https://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/game/suggestions

Bookahneer’s Geekwatch (May 25, 2012)

Welcome to today’s Bookahneer’s Geekwatch! The place about miscellaneous interesting news related to gaming (will most likely include at least one piece about Guild Wars 2 ^^).

We’ve heard sad news yesterday: 38 studios layed off all their employees yesterday (including all from Big Huge Games). What I found fascinating and encouraging was how fast the hashtag #38jobs appeared. Not long after, a Google document was created listing the various gaming companies that currently have job offers available. That’s what I love about the internet and the sub-communities. People sticking together and helping each other out! Let’s hope those people that are currently without a job will find a new one soon!

The Guild Wars 2 community is as active as ever. Just two examples today: Tilion from DragonSeasonCom gave an interview about their website to Video-Games24.com. Since it’s a Greek website, most of us would probably not understand a single word, so Tilion posted the English translation. Valerian from commentarilies posted a really good piece about the melee mesmer in Guild Wars 2. Yes, I’m biased here because I myself fell in love with that class. Although so far, I prefer a pistol as off-hand weapon. I’ll have to try the other options more, though.

The last week of the Newbie Blogger Initiative is ahead of us. The World’s End Tavern has a list of the new blogs. Have a look at it and maybe you’ll find your favourite new blogger over there!

And last but not least, there’s Because We May starting on May 24 and running till June 1: Independent developers putting their games on sale:

“For the last week of May (May 24 through June 1) our games will be deeply discounted to celebrate online stores that give us control over pricing: The App Store, Google Play, Steam, Desura, IndieVania, and a few others.” (quoted from their website)
